Director’s Vision

Writer's Vision

By Luiz Fernando Carvalho (2004, Release of DVD)

In those days when we were approaching the idea of adapting that beautiful novel by Eça de Queirós, we were aware that it was a story that would not reach the number of chapters typically required for a miniseries.

In respect and admiration for a work that, with each reading, was unveiled as an endless source of emotion and aesthetic novelty, Maria Adelaide Amaral and I decided to bring characters and actions of other books of Eça de Queirós to the miniseries (The Relic, A Capital…), thus making of them a kind of parallel plot.

A little over two years after the TV show Os Maias was aired, our proposal was to take advantage of this DVD release opportunity to rethink some details. Intending to grasp the strength and bright from the original novel, we made our way back. This is product is the result of an edition that removed, speech by speech, all the characters, dialogs and plot lines that did not belong to the novel Os Maias (except for a few scenes).

During such journey, I was aided by the generosity and knowledge, not to mention the passion, of literature teacher Beatriz Berrini, specializing in Eça de Queiroz, from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP).
