Synopsis
O Auto da Nossa Senhora da Luz special came from a sequel directed by Luiz Fernando Carvalho for the soap opera Pedra sobre Pedra, exhibited in chapter 152, on June 30, 1992. The director conceived the scenes from Ariano Suassuna’s Armorial Movement.
The sequel was hugely successful on television, so much so that the TV station received a record number of requests from its viewers to exhibit it again. This demand was decisive to turn the material into a telefilm, based on the novel’s chapter with additional scenes written by Braulio Tavares, Pericles Leal and Flávio Campos and interpreted by musician and actor Antonio Nóbrega, member of the Armorial Quintet, who was the narrator and also performed the songs.
And O Auto da Nossa Senhora da Luz special was exhibited in December 1992.
The telefilm tells the story of an ordinary man who faces suffering and doubt until he finds himself and his life, represented by light. Director Luiz Fernando Carvalho chose a teletheater narrative, filled with close-ups and on-stage line markings. To stitch the scenes together, a narration which is sometimes sung, sometimes spoken, similar to the structure of a cordel, was used.
The tale is narrated by a seahorse that, at the same time, explains the story to a boy (Bruno Silva) who wanders along a dirt road. Marina (Adriana Esteves), a character from the novel, plays the title role in the Tale, symbolizing consciousness. Leonardo (Maurício Mattar), who in Pedra sobre Pedra was Marina’s romantic partner, is the show’s guide. Some actors from the soap opera, including Andréa Beltrão, Jackyson Costa, Lilia Cabral, Suzana Borges and Tereza Seiblitz, also have roles in the Tale, as they play the elements of nature.
